Alex Barnes is Senior Advisor to IHS Markit and consultant specializing in energy market design and regulation. He has 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas sector, most of it spent in the liberalization of gas and electricity markets. He has worked for a range of companies including Total, BG Group, and Gazprom, helping them manage the impacts of energy liberalization. He established the Regulatory Affairs function for Gazprom Marketing & Trading in 2009, supporting its rapid expansion in gas and power trading in Europe. He has helped draft gas market rules as an industry representative on expert panels for the European Network of Transmission Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) and the European energy market regulator ACER. He is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, and holds a degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University, and an MBA from Henley Management College.

    Hydrogen is gaining momentum in India’s energy transition. With the announcement of the National Hydrogen Mission in 2021, India aims to become a green hydrogen hub backed by ambitious renewable capacity additions. This will require technological advancements in all forms of hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. IHS Markit expects green hydrogen to be cost-competitive with blue hydrogen production by 2030 in developed economies. What are the key focus areas for India to consider to make the National Hydrogen Mission a reality? Are there any early technological sign posts that are promising for reducing hydrogen costs?
